Sindh's Brave Journalist Has Been Martyred
Nasrullah Gadani is a prominent journalist from Ghotki, Sindh, known for his investigative reporting and advocacy on public issues. He works for the daily Awami Awaz and serves as the vice president of the Mirpur Mathelo Press Club. Gadani has built a reputation for highlighting social and political issues, particularly those affecting marginalized communities.
Gadani's journalistic career has been marked by his fearless reporting, often placing him at odds with local authorities. In September 2022, he reported on the eviction of Hindu families from a flood relief camp in Mirpur Mathelo, which led to his arrest on charges of extortion—a move widely seen as an attempt to silence him.
Despite the accusations, there was no substantial evidence, and he was released following local journalists' intervention.
In May 2023, Gadani was detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance, accused of inciting violence and disturbing public order. His detention was criticized by fellow journalists and human rights advocates as a violation of free speech and an attempt to stifle his critical voice.
Prominent figures, including the chairman of the Sindh Human Rights Commission, have called for his release, citing the vague and insufficient nature of the allegations against him
Gadani's work continues to be influential in Sindh, as he strives to bring attention to the issues faced by his community, despite the significant risks involved
